CM/ECF Filing Error Issue and Required Action for Filers

Monday, February 12, 2024

Infrequently, an error will occur in CM/ECF when case transactions are submitted simultaneously in two unrelated cases. CM/ECF will show a warning page to the user. Despite the warning showing that the transaction has been accepted (see red underlined sentence below), the error may prevent your filing from being docketed. This is an issue facing several bankruptcy courts throughout the country; unfortunately, there is no immediate resolution available to the Court.

Below is an example of the warning message generated in these situations:

When this CM/ECF error occurs, case numbers on the screen are inconsistent. In this example,
Case No. 23-04852 is the case in which a filing was attempted while Case No. 23-05341 is unrelated to what the user is trying to submit. In addition to this inconsistency, the text box may list an event different than being submitted by the user.

Until a permanent resolution is implemented, the Court urges users who receive the warning message to confirm the docketing of their transaction by checking the case docket. If the filing is on the docket, no further action is needed. If the transaction does not appear on the docket, the user must resubmit the filing.

If you encounter this filing error, or have questions, please contact the Clerk’s office.
